A recent survey commissioned by insurance company RSA, discovered that workplace stress levels were on the rise during the recession and are subsequently increasing the risk of accidents and injuries at work.
During the current recession, many businesses have seen the need to reduce staffing levels, which in turn has seen an increased risk of impacting on the safety of people still working. Staff could be asked to carry out more work, or work longer hours in order to help companies fight the difficulties faced during the credit crunch. The obvious knock on effect from this is an increased risk of errors being made by employees that might present a risk someone being injured in an accident, be it themselves, a co-worker, or a member of the public .
The study of 2,000 people has highlighted that millions of working days are being lost both as direct and indirect result of stress. The study also highlighted that overall staff productivity and employee personal lives were affected.
