News: Government considering compensation payouts for past victims of terrorism abroad

Date: 14/08/2009

The Government has come to the decision to offer financial help in the form of compensation to UK citizens injured in terrorist attacks whilst abroad. The compensation; however, will only be paid to victims of future attacks and ministers are still considering extending the compensation scheme to cover victims of previous attacks.

The decision to consider the retrospective scheme to aid Britons injured in Bali, Egypt and Mumbai has been fuelled by a campaign led by Will Pike, from London, who suffered serious spinal injuries in the Mumbai attacks. Mr Pike was paralysed from the waist down in the terror attack on the Taj Mahal hotel in November last year, and was told that he was only entitled to £15,000 from a Red Cross fund.
