A pensioner has won a defective products compensation claim for receiving burns when he sat on his new sofa which was imported from China. He is the first person in Britain to win such a claim and has been awarded a four figure payout after being hospitalised as a result of his horrific burns.
Maurice Heminsley, 68, bought his sofa from Furniture Warehouse, and was burnt by the material as it had been packed with a sachet consisting of a toxic substance. The sachet was used to prevent the material from becoming mouldy or damp during storage. There have been multiple cases of such burns caused by 'toxic sofas' and as a result, in May 2009, the European Commission banned products containing the toxic substance, dimethyl fumarate, from being made available on the market.
