A British welder has won his fight for compensation after being injured during an accident at work. John Downs was walking through the factory where he worked when he was hit by a metal sheet that fell whilst being moved by a tandem lift.
Following being resuscitated twice and a 19 hour operation, John was left blind, paralysed down one side, has lost his sense of taste and smell and is expected to need care for the rest of his life.
Although John was using a designated walkway when the accident happened, his employers did not accept full liability for the incident, which led to the case being taken to Sheffield High Court.
The judge ruled the employers fully liable for the accident and awarded John Downs with a full compensation amount to cover his rehabilitation and life-long care needs.
